A guide for prospective carers

Information for anyone interested in becoming a carer.

Could you become a shared lives carer?

You need:

  • experience of caring, either professionally or personally
  • a spare bedroom
  • a desire to care for someone
  • a willingness to share your home and include a service user in your everyday family life
  • an interest in helping someone develop new skills
  • a willingness to attend training
  • the ability to keep accurate records

What support might I provide?

  • support with personal care, including washing, dressing toileting and support with incontinence
  • support with mediation and accessing health services
  • support to develop independent living skills
  • support to manage finances
  • support to maintain relationships with friends and family
  • support to access the community and take part in activities

To be approved a shared lives carer

Application process and requirements:

  • an initial meeting to provide further information about the scheme and to find out more about you
  • proof of ID
  • home visits to include health and safety in your home
  • full employment history
  • three references including one from your current or most recent employer
  • enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
  • GP reference
  • landlord / mortgage permission

What the scheme offers

As a self employed carer you will receive:

  • a fee for the support and care you provide
  • 42 nights respite a year for long term placements
  • regular training and carers' meetings
  • an allocated shared lives worker
  • regular monitoring and review visits
  • support and advice
