Secure your home

Burglary is a crime of opportunity so don't give burglars the chance.

The good news is that a few simple steps will secure your home and put off most thieves.

  • Always make sure all your doors and windows are locked when you leave your home, even if you're just popping out for a minute. Most burglaries happen through open or unlocked doors and windows

  • Don't hide spare keys under your door mat, in the garage or in the shed (burglars know to look there). Don't hang your keys up behind your front door; determined burglars will try to hook them out through your letter box.

  • Leave a light and a radio on a timer when the nights start to draw in - this gives the impression that someone is home

  • Make sure thieves can't get into your garden by securing your gates, fences and locking your sheds

  • Look through your windows, if you can see valuable items a burglar can too. Move cash, phones, computers and gaming devices out of view to somewhere secure

  • Consider installing a visible burglar alarm
