Buddy Scheme

The Buddy is allocated as soon as the new applicant is ready to apply for their registration to Ofsted.

They give advice on what to expect at the Ofsted registration visit and how to be prepared. Once registration has been achieved, the Buddy is then available for support and advice on the many subjects of being a self-employed childminder.

What is a buddy?

A Buddy is an experienced childminder who has undergone a training and assessment programme to ensure they are suitable.

How many buddies are there?

There can be up to 20 Buddies at any one time living in all areas of the borough. Since the Buddy Scheme started many provisional childminders have benefited from this support and many have done well in their first Ofsted inspection.

What is the scheme about?

The scheme encourages the childminder to develop a network of contacts for themselves by using the childminding support groups and attending the variety of training and events offered to childminders in Hillingdon. The only issue that the buddies cannot guarantee is how soon the childminder will obtain business, although they have plenty of advice on how to promote themselves as a childminder.

The current group of childminder Buddies have not only made the scheme a success by their keenness to support others, but by their suggestions and ideas on how to improve the scheme. They have taken in their stride any changes that have been required.

Comments made by the Buddies:

  • "I can remember how isolated I felt when I started childminding and I am please to be involved in helping people to overcome this."

  • "My Buddy was very friendly and easy to talk to."
  • "I would have found everything so much harder without my Buddy's help, from setting my policies to coping with the isolation. "
