Councillor Mrs C. Dann

2001-02 - read about her year.

Councillor Mrs C Dann

I was privileged to be elected as the Mayor for 2001-2002 and again in 2007-2008.

During my Mayoral years I was given the opportunity to visit a wide range of events across all of the Borough and sometimes outside the borough. This would be when a local group were performing in a concert or perhaps taking part in a sports competition against another borough. I met many people of all ages and from many different backgrounds.

There are many groups run by volunteers who give so much of their time to enable so many people of all ages to meet and take part in a wide range of interests and offer support where it is required.

My years included visits to the many schools, Brunel University, Uxbridge College, the RAF and other military personnel located in the borough; the business community who provide a range of services for the residents and often employing many local people. The hospitals here and all of the emergency services are people the Mayor may meet as well as several religious and ethnic minorities and people with disabilities representatives.

The Mayor chairs the full council meetings when all of the councillors meet to discuss and make decisions on some of the council's business. There are opportunities to meet some of the many staff the council employs and learn more about their work.

The Mayor chooses usually one or two local charities they will support during their Mayoral year by raising public awareness and financial support for the groups. As there are so many worthwhile charities in the community it can be a difficult choice for the Mayor.

At times the Mayor may meet the borough's MPs at local events also the Mayors of other London boroughs and some from neighbouring outer boroughs.

For me my time as the Mayor was very interesting and I learnt about and was able to see many of the various services and facilities that there are in Hillingdon. I was also able to meet many of the people who live, work and visit the borough.

I have many happy and enjoyable memories of my times as the Mayor of Hillingdon.
