About the Hub

Hillingdon Music Hub is here to help all children and young people in the borough experience music

What we are here to do

We take as our strategic priorities the core and extension roles of Music Hubs in England.

Core roleHow we are delivering it
Ensure that every child aged five to 18 has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument (other than voice) through whole class ensemble teaching programmes for ideally a year (but for a minimum of a term) of weekly tuition on the same instrument. We now have an active and flourishing Whole class ensemble tuition (WCET) programme that schools can book and offer to their students. There are variations for Key Stage 2, Key Stage 1 and we even offer the chance to have lunchtime music clubs.
Provide opportunities to play in ensembles and to perform from an early stage. Our active and long-lived Music School and Ensembles programme runs at John Locke Academy in Uxbridge on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students from pre-Grade 1 to Grade 8 and beyond can perform in bands, groups and orchestras as well as having access to choirs and theory lessons.  See what we do at our video page.
Ensure that clear progression routes are available and affordable to all young peopleBeyond our Whole Class Ensemble Tuition programme, students who want to progress in music can sign up for Standard Tuition on orchestral instruments, or guitar or keyboard.
Develop a singing strategy to ensure that every pupil is singing regularly and that choirs and other vocal ensembles are available in the area.As well as the choirs at Music School, we run large-scale singing projects throughout the year, organised via schools. see what we do at our video page.
Extension RoleHow we are delivering it
Offer Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to school staff, particularly in supporting schools to deliver music in the curriculum. We offer CPD around our larger projects and have provided CPD around the Charanga resource. We are making plans for improved training and support opportunities for teachers who need additional confidence in delivering music in the curriculum.
Provide an instrument loan service, with discounts or free provision for those on low incomes. We hire instruments to all students engaged in our Standard Tuition programme for a maximum of two years per child. In addition, for those who are ready to buy their own instruments, we help parents save money through the Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme.
Provide access to large scale and/or high quality music experiences for pupils, working with professional musicians and/or venues.

Our concerts and events, held in local venues and in Central London help inspire and excite musical interest in all young people, whatever their level of learning.
