Hillingdon Stars of 2016

The Leader of the Council, Cllr Ray Puddifoot; Chief Executive, Fran Beasley and Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr John Hensley congratulated this year's Hillingdon stars for their outstanding work achievements at a special awards dinner on 18 October.

The annual awards, which recognise exceptional individual and team work, celebrated triumphs from a variety of services.

Employee of the year:  Sharon Carroll

Sharon Carroll

Sharon Carroll works at Ruislip Manor Library. She has gone the extra mile to provide excellent services for residents. Her creativity, ingenuity and enthusiasm has transformed the children's sessions offered at the library. As a result of her story time sessions, where her rapport with the children and ability to keep them focused shines, parents have spread the word about how enjoyable they are and the number of children attending has increased.

Sharon also liaises with local schools and is now delivering themed class visits with the same enthusiasm and attention to detail as the story times. These have been well received and much appreciated by our local schools and nurseries.

Team of the Year

This award recognises the work of teams who provide outstanding services directly to residents in Hillingdon or who provide exceptional support to frontline services. This year it went to Samantha Everett and Lara Marshall from the Libraries Service, who were involved in running the council's first ever month-long festival of arts, Culture Bite.

The pair were part of the working group that arranged and curated events and attended the majority of the larger events, acting as compères, interviewers, announcers and organisers. Both are managers and were able to keep everything running in their day jobs whilst stretching themselves into new areas of work and coordinating multiple activities

Lara and Sam have built a reputation that means publishers pitch events to them, which ensures Hillingdon now has a rolling programme of events to rival any other London borough and Culture Bite returned for a second year in 2016.

Special Award

A Special Award was presented to the Civic Amenity Site team to recognise the role they played in working with the London Fire Brigade last October when a fire broke out close to the site. The team consists of: David Meredith, Mark Sheehan, Gavin Hall, Ramzi King and Nikki Purcell.

Civic Amenity team

When the fire broke out at a private recycling site on New Years Green Lane, close to the council's Civic Amenity Site in Harefield, the team stayed at the scene long after their normal working hours and assisted the fire brigade by using JCBs to move 4,000 tonnes of waste wood away from the fire so that the water could penetrate the fire and prevent it from spreading. They did this despite the risk from the very fierce fire and plume of smoke. Without their input the fire could have spread and become a major incident, affecting more local businesses and potentially residents.  There were 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters involved in the incident which went on for several days, seeing flames up to seven metres tall.

In addition to the drivers, Civic Amenity Site Supervisor, Nikki Purcell, focused on the safety of her employees, conducting regular dynamic risk assessments and advising the fire brigade on the capabilities of her team and the equipment they were using.

The team were praised for their excellent knowledge of the site and local area, which was invaluable in managing the incident and minimising disruption to residents and local businesses.
