Chris Finnegan

Chris Finnegan MBE (1944-2009) was born in Uxbridge and grew up in Cowley Road.

He was one of eight siblings and was introduced to boxing by his elder brother Terence at Hayes Boxing Club. During his Chris Finnegan career Chris fought 38 times at light-heavyweight and won three Lonsdale belts as British Champion and also claimed the Commonwealth and European titles, which he successfully defended twice.

He won a gold medal in the middleweight division at the Mexico City Summer Olympic Games on 26 October 1968. Chris was awarded an MBE following this sporting success and went on to enjoy a professional career claiming Commonwealth and European titles.

The plaque was officially unveiled by the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Michael Markham, on Friday 26 October 2015 at Hayes Boxing Club in Judge Heath Lane. The Leader of Hillingdon Council, Councillor Ray Puddifoot, also attended the ceremony along with members of the Finnegan family, members of Hayes Boxing Club and representatives from British Boxing governing bodies.

Chris Finnegan became lifetime President of the club in 1999. The current gym building is situated on the site of the old athletic stadium, where the previous clubhouse used by Finnegan was located.
