Hillingdon families celebrate primary school offers

83.6 per cent of children starting primary school this year are celebrating receiving their first choice of school, thanks to the council's £149m school building programme which has ensured that all children have a primary school place to go to in September.

News release: 17 April 2013

The latest statistics also show that 94.2 per cent of children who applied for a primary school place in the borough have been offered one of their top three schools. This is an increase on last year's primary school placements.

Like many boroughs in London and across the country, Hillingdon has seen an increase in the demand for places because of rising birth rates and people moving into the area. In total, the council predicts the borough will need 15 new reception classrooms over the next six years and is embarking on London's largest school building programme to ensure all primary aged school children have a school place.

The council has worked in partnership with schools in Hillingdon and other partners to successfully meet the rising need for primary places over the last five years. This has largely been achieved through the expansion of existing schools to secure high quality education facilities.

Cllr David Simmonds, Cabinet Member for Education and Children's Services commented:

"At a time when the demand for primary school places is on the rise, we are proud to not only be able to ensure all our children have a classroom to go to in September, but also to be able to increase the number of pupils being offered their first choice of primary school.

"We are firmly putting our families first by ensuring that we continue to plan effectively for the rise in demand for schools places, and are working closely with other education providers so that  future generations of Hillingdon pupils will continue to get a good education close to where they live."
