Reading Well Books on Prescription provides self-help reading for adults for a range of common mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, phobias and some eating disorders.

The books are based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and have been recommended by experts. reading well-1 They provide useful information to help you understand your condition as well as step-by-step strategies and techniques to make positive changes. All have been tried and tested and found to be useful by others.

There is evidence from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) that self-help reading can help people with common mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression.

Reading Well Books on Prescription is the first national scheme for England. It builds on local best practice to create a quality-assured and consistent national model and is based on an original scheme developed in Cardiff by Professor Neil Frude. reading well 2 The book collection has been developed by The Reading Agency, in partnership with the Society of Chief Librarians and is supported by the following health partners:

  • Department of Health (IAPT) 
  • Royal College of General Practitioners
  • Royal College of Nursing
  • British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies
  • The British Psychological Society
  • Mind

The books can be recommended by GPs or other health professionals or can be borrowed from the library independently.

Free reservations for titles from the Reading Well booklist are available from all other Hillingdon libraries.
