Information, advice and guidance

Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning (HACL) is committed to supporting everyone with whom it comes into contact through high quality information, advice and guidance (IAG).

Whether you come along for an open day, call our phone lines or enrol on one of our courses, we aim to provide impartial, practical and meaningful information advice and guidance (IAG). General advice, both pre-course and for progression opportunities, is also available from curriculum and centre staff or from the learner services team based at each adult learning centre.

General advice and guidance 

For general careers advice, support building your CV or applying for jobs, anyone can drop into our Open Learning Centre (see below) or enrol on one of our employability workshops. Find out more »

Pre course IAG

Thinking about enrolling on one of our courses? We have a range of sources you can use to find the right course for you. You can access information, such as course details, through any of our Adult Learning centres. Course information sheets tell you the date, time, duration and price of a courses as well as what you can expect to learn and necessary starting levels. Our brochure includes route maps for every curriculum area, details about courses, employment opportunities and guidance on financing your course. 

We also have pre course events, such as open days, to which anybody can drop in, and initial assessment days for specific subject areas. At these events, course leaders will speak to you one to one about your goals and options and help you to identify the right course for you. If you want to do a course which has a qualification attached, you will be asked to take an initial assessment to help us identify an appropriate starting point. You can find out about financing your course and what learning support is available, should you have learning difficulty or disability.

If we do not have a course suitable for you, we will endeavour to help you find one which meets your needs elsewhere.

IAG on course 

Helping on Computer If you are a learner with us, you can expect advice and guidance throughout your learning journey with us. As part of your course and tutorials with your tutor you will be supported to identify and work towards your next steps after the course has finished.

We also hold open days and subject-specific progression events throughout the year where you are welcome to pop in for information, advice and guidance about your goals. See below for more information about upcoming progression events. 

Our Open Learning Centre (OLC) is also available to all learners to drop into. See below for more information.

Open Learning Centre

Our open learning programme is situated across the borough and runs at different times. Whether you're already a learner with us or not, you can drop in to job shop for help finding work. Please look at the Open Learning Powerpoint [308kb] for more information. 

If you are enrolled on one of our courses, you can come along for extra support to help you develop in your chosen subject.

Maths class Here's what our OLC offers:

  • support for maths, English, ESOL & ICT
  • study skills for vocational learners
  • tailored individual support (planned in advance)
  • exam preparation
  • time management
  • distance learning programme (English and maths, Level 2)
  • homework support
  • help building CVs and applying for jobs

Upcoming IAG events

Drop-in information, advice and guidance open days for 2018

For information about our courses, come to one of our open days at our Adult Learning Centres, which are designed to support you in finding the course that's right for you. Please note, that open days are arranged on a first-come, first-served basis; we work as quickly as possible, but you may have to wait for the person you to speak to, to become available.

Open day dates for January: 

  • Thursday 4 January 2018, 10am to 2pm at Brookfield ALC
  • Friday 5 January 2018, 10am to 2pm at Harlington ALC
  • Saturday 6 January 2018, 10am to 2pm at Brookfield ALC

If you wish to apply for a Childcare, Health and Social Care course or Floristry and Horticulture programme you may be required to undertake an initial assessment. 

Talks for Floristry and Horticulture, Childcare Health and Social Care will be held prior to initial assessment. Please call 01895 556455 to book on.

There's an opportunity to undertake an initial assessment on the open day, don't worry, if you can't stay you can book in for an initial assessment at any time. Please call our centre on 01895 556455.


Please note; these open days exclude those wanting to apply for English, Maths and ESOL. If you are interested in one of these programmes please call our centres who can provide you with further information and arrange for an initial assessment. If you interested in learning more about counselling please see the Health and Social Care web page for further information about the counselling specific open days.

Childminder briefing session and childminder initial assessments

The local authority regularly runs briefing sessions for adults wishing to become child minders. The next briefing is to be confirmed

These sessions are held at the Civic centre. To book a place please contact the Learning and Development team on 01895277692.

Share your skills and help others in your community

We have different volunteering opportunities to match and develop your skills - you could assist a tutor in class or provide extra support for learners out of class; you could work in customer service or help us communicate with learners.  Volunteers are an important part of our team and we want your volunteering experience to benefit you, as well as the learners that we work with. We provide training to help you in your role.

Volunteer with us and you can gain confidence, build valuable work experience and explore new career opportunities.
