Stock and reader requests

Book shelves

Children's stock

It remains the responsibility of parents, guardians or carers, rather than the library staff, to determine the suitability of materials used by their children both in print and online formats.

Reference services

Reference items can only be used in the library.

You may be asked to return a reference item after 10 minutes if someone else wants to refer to it. This also applies to newspapers and magazines.

Video games

Video games in the UK are classified by two different boards:

  • PEGI (Pan European Game Information)
  • BBFC (British Board Film Classification)

Please note a BBFC "15" (British Board Film Classification) is the equivalent to the 'PEGI 16"rating. This means that customers 15 and over will be able to borrow these games.

Reader requests (non-stock items)

Hillingdon Library Service offers library members the opportunity to request adult fiction and non-fiction materials that are not currently in our stock; charges are applicable and further conditions apply as detailed in this policy.

  • A non-stock item request can be placed at any Hillingdon library by members aged 18 years or over.

  • A non-refundable non-stock reservation fee, as advertised in the fees and charges, minus the in-stock reservation fee, is payable on submission, and the balance (ie the in-stock reservation fee) will be payable upon receipt of the item.

  • By placing an application for a non-stock item, the borrower is agreeing to assume full responsibility for the care and condition of any item borrowed:
    • Items must be returned in the same condition as when they were lent.
    • Items lost or damaged will incur a full replacement charge (ie the cost of purchasing the item and any other administration costs incurred).

  • Submitting a non-stock item request does not guarantee that it will be supplied, or that it will arrive within a specified timescale (for example it may not be obtainable from any sources available to the service).

  • The library service reserves the right not to procure any items which have been requested. A decision will be made by the service on considering such factors as whether the item covers an obscure or specialist subject, contains outdated information, is very expensive or is an unsuitable format for library use.

  • The following items are excluded from the Reader Requests service:
    • Audiobooks (except for the BEE AWARE scheme)
    • CDs
    • Computer games
    • DVDs
    • E-books
    • Language courses
    • Playsets
    • Sets of vocal or music scores
    • Orchestral sets

  • Conditions of issue:
    • Items are issued for three weeks.
    • All items, except those procured from the British Library, may be renewed for a maximum of five times (subject to recall).
    • Items borrowed from the British Library cannot be renewed.
A new application must be made to borrow the item for a further three weeks (subject to availability).
    • Some items will only be made available as reference stock at Uxbridge Library.
