Conditions for copying material held by the Local Studies Service

We will gladly supply copies of material from our collections.

This does not give you the right to publish or digitally reproduce them.

Be aware of copyright regulations.

Copyright

Anyone who takes an original photograph or writes any kind of document holds the copyright in that item.

This means they must give their permission if the item is to be:

  • Published in a book, magazine or other publication
  • Shown on a website
  • Digitally reproduced for an exhibition or presentation
  • Digitally reproduced for display on commercial premises Gypsy boy at Ruislip 1965

To use an item for any of these purposes, you must get permission directly from the copyright holder.

Two more important points:

  • The copyright in some of our collections has been transferred to us
  • Copyright is not permanent. There are rules for how long each type of copyright lasts.

We can give advice on all aspects of copyright.

Other conditions

  • You must complete a reprographics form if you want to copy archive documents, maps or photographs. Bus shelter at Harlington Corner 1934
  • You should acknowledge us as Hillingdon Local Studies, Archives and Museum Service if you use an item copied here for publication or display.
  • You should inform us and pay the appropriate fee if an item originally copied for personal use is later published or used commercially.
  • All fees must be paid before copying is undertaken.
