What is a scam?

Confidence tricks and scams take a wide variety of forms and they target both consumers and businesses. Although there are some generic forms of scam, new variations appear regularly to evade enforcement or exploit new opportunities.

We have provided links to several websites containing information about a number of current scams and useful contacts should you fall victim to one.

Below, we have listed some of the more common cons, but remember there are rogues who are continually devising new ways to get you to part with your money - so, be on your guard and tell us if you know of a rogue trader!

The best defence to scams is a high level of awareness and a healthy scepticism of all offers that appear to be too good to be true.

The scams and rip-offs listed were taken from the Rip-off Tip-off website. Visit this site for further information plus the opportunity to make Trading Standards Officers aware of the scams and rip-offs that you know about.
