Frequently asked questions about apprenticeships

apprentice-2 What are apprenticeships?

An apprenticeship is a training programme designed by/with employers to give individuals the skills and qualifications they require to progress within a chosen career. They are a combination of on the job and off the job learning.

What are the key benefits for me?

The key benefits for any apprentice are:

  • Earn a salary
  • Get paid holidays
  • Receive training
  • Gain a nationally recognised qualification
  • Learn job specific skills.

You will work alongside experienced members of staff to learn the exact skills needed for your chosen career. Most of your training will be delivered in the workplace, so you will learn the skills needed to do your job well. However, some apprenticeship programmes may require you to attend specific training events either at work, off-site (possibly at college) or via eLearning.

How old do I have to be to apply for an apprenticeship role?

To start an apprenticeship programme you must be aged between 16 to 64 years old and have left full-time education.

How long does an apprenticeship take to complete?

Apprenticeships take a minimum of 12 months to complete but, depending on the qualification, they may take longer.

apprentice-4 I don't have much experience or qualifications; can I still apply for an apprenticeship?

Yes, you can! The individual job application will advise of the minimum entry requirements for the specific role, but you will also have the opportunity to gain qualifications in English, Maths and ICT whilst completing your Apprenticeship.

What do I need to do to complete the apprenticeship programme?

In order to complete your apprenticeship programme you will be required to:

  • complete a vocational qualification
  • complete and pass functional skills in ICT, Maths and English (you will be exempt from these assessments if you can provide proof of a GCSE grade A*-C in these topics)
  • undertake relevant on the job training
  • complete an employment rights and responsibilities workbook
