Charlotte Brontë - Women and literary ambition with Dr Claire O'Callaghan

Claire O'Callaghan will talk about Charlotte Brontë's literary ambitions and her desire to be remembered, how she sought to carve her professional identity and some of the challenges she faced as a woman writer that meant she had to be published under a pseudonym.

About the speaker

Claire O'Callaghan is a Lecturer in English at Brunel University, London whose teaching and research specialisms are in queer fiction, Victorian and neo-Victorian literature and culture, and gender and sexuality in literature, film and television.

She is an expert on the writings of novelist Sarah Waters having published Sarah Waters: Gender and Sexual Politics (Bloomsbury, 2017) and co-edited Sarah Waters and Contemporary Feminisms (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). Claire also has research and teaching interests in the lives and works of the Brontës and is the author of Emily Brontë Reappraised: A View from the New Millennium, which is forthcoming with Saraband Press in 2018. She is currently writing a series of pieces on the Brontës, including articles on sexual violence in Withering Heights, feminist anger in Jane Eyre, and queerness and cross-dressing in Charlotte Brontë's writing.
