The Bunker needs some volunteers!

We want enthusiastic, friendly people with a positive attitude and a good understanding of customer service principles to join our team of volunteers at the Battle of Britain Bunker, Uxbridge.

  • Are you a former teacher or a teacher in training? Do you have experience working for youth organisations (e.g. scouts, guides, cadets) or with children?
  • Do you enjoy public speaking, or are you looking to gain experience of public speaking?
  • Do you like talking to people, making them feel welcome and included?
  • Do you have an interest in history or the military? Are you interested in developing a career in museums or the heritage sector?

If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, then you might be the person we're looking for!

About the positions

These are exciting times for Hillingdon's heritage, with an ambitious project to construct a brand new visitor centre at the Battle of Britain Bunker nearing completion. The visitor centre will provide fantastic new facilities for our visitors to enhance their experience of the Bunker, including extra exhibition space, a cafe, gift shop and educational facilities.

Our Customer Service Volunteers will meet and greet visitors upon their arrival at the site, provide directions, answer questions and generally make visitors feel welcome.

Our Education Volunteers will support our staff to lead school groups when they visit the site, helping to deliver learning sessions and supervising classes.

Our Volunteer Tour Guides will lead groups on guided tours of the original wartime Bunker and it's operations room, explaining how it worked and about its key role in the Battle of Britain.

Training will be provided and these positions therefore represent an excellent opportunity for professional development, as well as a chance to contribute to exciting, ongoing projects at the Bunker. . Volunteers will be required to complete a "Volunteer Agreement".

Volunteer profile

Reports to: Senior Curator: Museums, Archives and Local Studies

This outline will be used to select volunteers for this opportunity, and we suggest that you describe how you meet these criteria in your application.

Our ideal volunteer will:

  • be educated to A level standard or have some relevant experience
  • be flexible. Ideally available at weekends when the Bunker will be busiest, and for some occasional evening working
  • have some experience of cash handling procedures, ideally in a front of house setting at a museum, gallery, heritage site or similar
  • have some experience of working with children in an educational setting
  • be passionate about customer service and have well developed communication skills
  • be able to present information effectively to a variety of audiences
  • have a sound understanding of Health and Safety as it applies to public buildings
  • be willing to undertake training as required
