Hazardous chemical incidents

Although chemical related incidents are rare, it is important to respond promptly. This page outlines how to prepare for and respond to a Hazardous Chemical Incident in your local area.

Hazard

Prevention

  • If you have any chemicals that may be dangerous ensure that they are stored in a safe container in a safe environment. Make sure that the container is labelled appropriately with Emergency Action Codes commonly know as Hazchem Codes.

Warning

  • If you hear of a chemical spillage within your local area, watch the news for updates or listen to local radio stations (BBC Radio London on 94.9FM).

Response

  • If you hear of a chemical spillage, ensure that you are kept up to date by listening to the news or local radio stations. These will inform you whether to stay inside or go outside depending on the incident itself.
  • Go inside.
  • Close all external doors and windows.
  • Turn off air conditioning and fans.
  • Do not return outside until told it is safe to do so.
  • If you are evacuated, listen to the news or radio, if you have access, for regular updates.
