Drop litter and face the consequences
Hillingdon Council is launching a new litter campaign to take tougher action against those caught dropping litter in the streets or throwing it out of their cars.
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 it is illegal to drop litter or dump any waste or rubbish on private or public land. Those caught dropping litter which includes chewing gum, apple cores and cigarette butts, may receive a fixed penalty notice of £80 or face a maximum fine of up to £2500.
In a
survey of more than 500 residents [87kb], 92 per cent of respondents said they would support the council, police and community support officers taking a tougher approach against people who drop litter. 82 per cent of people said they were in favour of the council publishing CCTV images of people caught dropping litter.
Cllr Sandra Jenkins, Cabinet Member for Environment, Said: "Dropping litter in the street is unacceptable and we plan on taking stronger action against it. This is something residents have told us they want, and we hope stronger action will mean cleaner streets in Hillingdon."
The council spends hundreds of thousands of pounds every year on cleaning the roads, parks, clearing litter and seven thousand tonnes of litter is dropped on the borough's street every year - This is the equivalent to 878 double decker buses.
You can help us keep Hillingdon cleaner by reporting fly tipping. You can report it online, or you can also telephone the council's Contact Centre on 01895 556000 or email contactcentre1@hillingdon.gov.uk.
