Well-Being Project (WBP)
A mental health service for unaccompanied asylum seeking young people.
We offer a range of mental health services to looked-after unaccompanied asylum seeking young people who might suffer from moderate to severe psychological adjustment difficulties upon arrival to the UK, or persistent emotional problems. The service covers the geographical area of the borough of Hillingdon.
We offer
- consultation and training to agencies working with the young people
- mental health assessment and therapeutic intervention for the young people such as individual interventions, group work, e.g. life skills programme, memory box / orientation group, transition group, healthy eating cooking group.
About us
Our team consists of:
- a team coordinator and systemic psychotherapist
- a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist
- two primary mental health workers
- a youth worker
- an administrator
Languages currently spoken include Farsi and French. If we cannot speak a language we work closely with professional, confidential interpreting services.
We think about:
- the context of the young people's lives, such as being unaccompanied and looked after
- their asylum status and the predicament they are in
- the cultures and economic conditions they come from, and
- oppression of different kinds.
Services A-Z
We provide:
- case-centred consultation to individuals or groups of professionals and carers
- promotion of mental health within care planning
- support across agencies
- mental health assessment of young people
- group work
- educational, sport and social activities and networks
- other psychotherapies.
Training:
We also provide specialist support and training for professionals and volunteers working with looked-after unaccompanied asylum seeking young people. The training aims to enhance mental health awareness and improve skills.
Consultation based services
We accept requests for consultation from:
- the Asylum Service
- educational agencies
- Asphaleia (educational establishment)
- health services
- Multi Agency Support Team (MAST)
- Child, Family and Adolescent Consultation Service (CFACS).
You should forward a completed consultation form and any other relevant information (such as chronology) to us. Consultation forms can be obtained from the team administrator.
A consultation with a member of the team will be offered.
A mental health assessment and/or therapeutic intervention will only be offered after the consultation has been completed. The decision on what work will be done lies with the consultee and their manager.
Who can access services?
The young person needs to have a named worker or team manager who holds case responsibility within Hillingdon to be eligible.
The Asylum Service, education or health must have completed an assessment identifying the need for a consultation and / or mental health assessment.
Where people can be seen is flexible, we provide outreach services using local community services, such as:
- The Abacus Centre, MAST situated in West Drayton
- CFACS in Uxbridge
- GP clinics, Hesa practice in Hayes
- Educational sites, local schools and colleges
- Youth centres
- Other council sites
