Leader's Initiative

The Leaders Initiative for Older People aims to support local projects and schemes designed to help keep older people safe, active and independent.

Cllr Ray Puddifoot

Every year Cllr Ray Puddifoot, Leader of the Council and Older People's Champion, oversees the delivery of this initiative to improve the access older people have to facilities, activities, and advice and support across the borough.

The Leader's Initiative was first established in 2005. Funding supported a wide variety of projects including, dining centre improvements, installation of street and park benches, social events and activities, and a series of service schemes to provide greater support to vulnerable older people.

More recently the initiative has provided a number of popular projects including:

  • Burglar alarm scheme - offering Hillingdon residents a free burglar alarm, installation and operating guidance, with a free service available after 18 months. To date over 7,000 alarms have been instsalled, helping older people feel safe in their homes
  • Financial health checks provided by Age UK Hillingdon - giving older people advice and support on money matters, claiming benefits and debt management
  • Brown badge parking scheme - helping older residents with mobility problems to use easy-access parking bays in a variety of local car parks and retail spaces; over 11,000 residents now own a 'brown badge'
  • Heater loan scheme - loaning electric heaters to residents living in their own homes if they have a heating breakdown
