Heritage / Civic Pride

This Workstream focuses on delivering specific Heritage/Civic Pride projects within the borough, building a historic legacy and promoting Local Arts and Culture.

  • Commemorative blue plaques - The latest plaque was erected in October 2013 at Harmondsworth Village for Sir Barnes Wallis CBE designer of the R100 airship, geodetic construction, Upkeep, Highball, Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs. Pioneer of swing-wing and tailess aircraft and hypersonic flight.
  • Other Civic Pride/Heritage projects which have helped build on the historic legacy in Hillingdon include:
    • Environmental success
    • The Green Flag scheme now has 28 sites accredited.  
    • The London and Britain in Bloom campaigns achieved gold standard.  
    • Autumn Fruit and Vegetable Show - Annual prize giving event for produce grown and displayed by local residents.
    • Centenary Fields in Trust status awarded to Harfield Village Green.
    • Acknowledging the past 
    • Installation at the renovated Harefield war memorial site of commemorative pavement plaques for two Harefield-born World War 1 Victoria Cross recipients (Nov 2014)
    • Maintenance and renovation of borough wide war memorial monuments and plaques
    • Civic reception and award of the Borough Civic Medal to World War 2 Armed Service veterans  
    • National Remembrance November - civic ceremony to acknowledge the national two minutes silence, accompanied by maroon rocket launch from 11 sites around the borough.
    • Polish War Memorial service (World War 2) - working in conjunction with the Polish Air Force Association to deliver the annual commemorative service in September. 
    • Supporting the service community 
    • Dedication of Gurkha-Nepalese Community burial ground at Cherry Lane Cemetery (Nov 2014)  
    • Supporting the service community - please amend this to remove sunset ceremony reference , but include Civic event to mark Armed Forces Week including flag raising ceremony.  
    • RAF Art exhibition 2014 - charitable fund raising exhibition of work created by RAF officer serving in Afghanistan 
    • Renovation of historic buildings associated with World War 2 campaign on ex-RAF Uxbridge site. 
    • Borough 50th anniversary 2015
    • Delivering a co-ordinated programme of diverse Civic, cultural and public events during 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of the borough
