Libraries nominated for regional award

Two of Hillingdon Council's newly refurbished libraries are in the running to scoop a prestigious accolade for their building design.

News release: 31 March 2014

Mackenzie Wheeler Architects & Designers, who were contracted by the council to come up with the designs for Oak Farm and Harlington Libraries, have been shortlisted for the London Regional Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards 2014.

Oak Farm Library has been nominated for Best Public Service Building and Harlington Library is up for Best Educational Building.

Councillor Douglas Mills, Cabinet Member for Community, Commerce and Regeneration, said: "It is a great achievement to be shortlisted for these awards and reinforces the fact that our libraries investment programme is one to be proud of. We are the only council in the country to have rebuilt or refurbished all of its libraries, and have extended opening hours too."

Kate Nolan, Associate at Mackenzie Wheeler Architects & Designers, added: "We have been lucky enough to work alongside Hillingdon Council on the refurbishment of all seventeen of their libraries and there has been real pride from all parties involved in each project, from the construction teams on site and the library staff, to the end users and local residents. Feedback has so far been very positive and extremely encouraging. We're very excited that these projects have been shortlisted for the LABC Awards."

The awards, which are being held on May 9 at The Guildhall, celebrate building achievements across the region. All winning projects of the regional qualifiers will automatically be shortlisted for the LABC Finals, which will take place in London on Tuesday 11 November.
