Conduct within the library

Child in library

General behaviour

  • Antisocial, illegal, violent or intimidating behaviour will not be tolerated and action will be taken against those who threaten, harass or abuse library staff.
  • If your behaviour is likely to annoy others, any member of library staff can:
    • ask you to leave the library
    • stop you from coming into the library
  • You may eat and drink in the library but please check with staff if there are designated areas. No hot, smelly or messy foods allowed.
  • Smoking, drinking alcohol or sleeping are not allowed in the library.
  • There are no facilities for praying in the library. Please speak to a member of staff about the nearest prayer rooms and places of worship.
  • You may not use the library premises for personal business for which there is a charge (including conducting private tutoring, meetings and interviews).
  • Please see our Meeting rooms in libraries page if you would like to hire a room.

Care of library property

  • Please take care of library property and report damaged items to the staff before you borrow them.
  • If you lose or damage an item you will be asked to pay for a replacement. This also applies to the inserts for CDs, videos and DVDs where the full price of the item will be charged.
  • Please take care when using library equipment and furniture.

Children using the library

  • Library staff are not responsible for children in the library and parents/carers must accompany children under 11 to ensure their safety.
  • Children under the age of 16 must have a valid library card in order to use library PCs and iMacs.
  • It remains the responsibility of parents, guardians or carers, rather than the library staff, to determine the suitability of materials used by their children.

Animals in the library

  • Guide dogs and assistance dogs are the only animals allowed in the library.

Personal belongings

  • Please keep personal belongings with you at all times. Hillingdon libraries are not responsible for your personal belongings.
  • If we find lost property in one of our libraries we will keep it for approximately three months. We will do what we can to contact the owner, but this may not always be possible.
  • For security reasons please do not leave bags unattended in the library.

Using equipment in the library

  • Mobile phones and music players should not be used where they are likely to disturb others.
  • The majority of libraries have designated areas where devices can be plugged in. Please look for notices or speak to a member of staff before plugging in. Staff can ask you to unplug your devices if they judge it presents a Health and Safety risk. Devices must be unplugged when they have finished charging.
