The Local Studies Service's archive collections

This is only a partial overview of our records. It explains the different types of archive material, and highlights some of our 200 collections.

Most of our archives are held off-site and require three working days' notice for retrieval.

Local authorities

  • London Borough of Hillingdon, from 1965
  • Uxbridge, Ruislip-Northwood, Hayes and Harlington, and Yiewsley and West Drayton Urban District Councils, Uxbridge Rural District Council and Uxbridge Borough, c1900-1965
  • Parish Councils, 19th century-1930

Mainly minute books, recording decision-making; rate books, listing owners and occupiers of each address; also some school and library collections

  • Harlington, Hillingdon and Uxbridge Burial Boards, 1850s-1939
  • Uxbridge Board of Health, 1856-1894

Mainly minute books

  • Uxbridge Poor Law Union, 1839-1895

Most administrative records, and records of staff and inmates, are held at the London Metropolitan Archives


The effective local government between 1538 and the 19th century

  • St John the Baptist parish, Hillingdon, from 1676
  • St Margaret's parish, Uxbridge, 1802-1840 (overseers only)

Mainly the records of the vestry (the parish administrators), the churchwardens (managers of church and churchyard) and overseers of the poor


  • Providence Congregational Church, Uxbridge, 1789-1972
  • Old Meeting Congregational Church, Uxbridge, 1790-1962


  • Colham, Cowley Peachey, Harlington, Harmondsworth, Ruislip, Ruislip (St Katherine's), Uxbridge, mostly 17th -19th centuries

Mainly cases in the manor court involving tenants and property, or manorial rules, rights and customs.


  • Hayes estate of the Minet family, from 1699

Mainly deeds and correspondence recording property transactions; also maps and plans

  • Several smaller collections of property deeds


Several small business collections, including:

  • W L Eves, architects, Uxbridge, 1894-1950

Plans, mostly of shops and houses in the Uxbridge area

  • Uxbridge Corn Exchange Co, Uxbridge, 1859-1886

Records on the formation of the company, and work on Uxbridge Market House

  • Grainge and Co, ironmongers, Uxbridge, 1798-1891

Records on the formation of the company, property deeds, correspondence, shipping papers, etc

  • J Brownie, sack, sail cloth and twine maker, Uxbridge, from 1833

Several collections, including:

  • Uxbridge Volunteer Infantry, 1830-1899

The papers of several local families, including:

  • The Ewer family, farmers of Ruislip, 1814-20th century
  • The Suter family, store-owners of Uxbridge, 20th century

Personal papers, including:

  • Letters by actress Ellen Terry, 1889
  • Hand-written music book of Thomas Bates, organist at St Andrews, Uxbridge, 1827
  • Thomas Strutt's 'Peregrinations of a Kiddy', describing in detail the Uxbridge of the 1850s

Local Studies Collection

Boxes of mixed archive documents, articles, newscuttings, brochures, photographs, etc arranged by subject. These are available in ur searchroom without prior booking.
