New visitor centre development

Hillingdon Council is investing nearly £6 million towards creating a new high-tech visitor and exhibition centre adjacent to the bunker which will open on Friday 30 March (Good Friday).

Building completed in October 2017, and was handed over to the council from the contractor in November 2017.

Skellon Studios, specialist exhibition designers, began installing the displays in December 2017. The new displays will include interactive exhibitions tracing the development of the UK's innovative air defence system, exploring the bunker's role beyond the Battle of Britain and true stories from those who were there, amongst others. The original plotting map table will also be replicated with a 360 degree touch screen experience for those unable to go underground to visit the bunker and the original Operations Room.

The building will be 2,000 square metres in size and set across two levels. The design embraces the central themes of flight and planes with a shell-like form and twisted geometry. There will be a 519 square metre main exhibition hall, which will house a variety of exhibits; 95 seat auditorium and lecture hall; a café and gift shop; reception area; toilets and a workspace for schools, corporate events and functions.
