What options are available to me?

The Homeless Prevention Team are currently working with families that will have their income reduced as a result of the benefit cap. Please do not delay in contacting the team on 01895 556 666, option 5 to receive information of what action you can take.

Find Work

If you or your partner start gainful employment and qualify for Working Tax Credit you will not be subject to the benefit cap.

There is help and advice available to assist you into work.  You can speak to your local Jobcentre Plus on 0345 604 3719 or visit the GOV UK website.

Negotiate a lower rent with your landlord

You may be able to negotiate a reduced rent allowing you to remain in your current home.  You will need to speak to your landlord and reach an agreement on a new lower rent.  The landlord is not obliged to accept your offer of paying less rent, but it may be better for all parties to avoid the cost of eviction and seeking new tenants

Pay the shortfall

You might be able to pay the shortfall using money from other benefits you receive.  You should look to make savings from your other outgoings (i.e. Car; TV; mobile phone etc.)  Citizens Advice Bureau offer help with managing your money their telephone number is 0344 848 7903.  You can also contact  the Money Advice Service

Move to a cheaper property

If you are unable to negotiate a lower rent with your current landlord and cannot afford to pay the shortfall, you will need to move to an affordable alternative property.  Please see the LHA rates for the UK:

Please do not delay in contacting the Homeless Prevention team on 01895 556 666, option 5.
