The Battle of Britain Bunker - Learning Centre

Learn more about World War II and the Battle of Britain by booking one of our school sessions.

Sessions are designed to highlight the importance of the Bunker within the Battle of Britain and World War II, and to further engage students with our collection.

The Battle of Britain Bunker offers free school sessions, Monday to Friday. All school sessions include a 60 minute activity in our Learning Centre, followed by a 30 minute private tour of the Bunker.

Our sessions

Our sessions support World War II themes in the National Curriculum, as well as cross-curricular links such as literature, art and design and maths.

  • History Explorers

Discover what it was like to work in the Bunker by handling and learning from objects that were used in the operations room. Students are taught about life in the Bunker, and the different roles men and women would have had at the time. Working together in groups, students will select an object to focus on, and create a poster about it to bring back to school.

Recommended for lower Key Stage 2.

  • The Dowding System bunker2

In this session students learn about The Dowding System, the RAF's air defence system that controlled the Battle of Britain. Working together in groups, students are given a role within the RAF, and have to work together to solve problems and make decisions, and see the results of the battle played out.

Recommended for upper Key Stage 2.

  • Newsflash: The Battle of Britain

Students develop their writing and presenting skills while learning about the Battle of Britain. Through a multimedia presentation, handling objects, and museum resources, students work together to write and record their own radio broadcast about the Battle of Britain.

Recommended for upper Key Stage 2.

Sessions can be created or adapted based on your class's year group or learning ability. Please contact our Education Officer for more details.
