Bail supervision and support scheme (professionals)

Information for the court and other professionals

 Who is this service for?

This service is for young people between the ages of 10 and 17 from the borough of Hillingdon who appear in court and would otherwise be remanded in local authority accommodation or custody.

What are the aims of the scheme?

  • To provide credible community based bail supervision and support programmes based on individual needs and concerns.
  • To work with young people to help them resist further offending whilst they are remanded.
  • To support young people in attending all relevant court appearances whilst they are remanded.

What is the process?

A young person may be referred to the scheme by any of the following:

  • Magistrates/Judges
  • Youth Offending Service (YOS) Officers
  • Court Duty Staff
  • Solicitors/Barristers
  • Young People or their parents/carers

An assessment will be undertaken using the framework set by the Youth Justice Board, to determine the level of support that may be appropriate.

Consultation will take place with the court and the young person's solicitor regarding the legal position in relation to bail and the needs identified in the assessment interview.

The proposed programme will be discussed with the young person and their carer and they will be asked to sign a contract to confirm their willingness to participate in the scheme.

The plan and the signed contract will then be submitted to the court for its consideration.

The programme

The young person will attend, with their carer, for their first appointment on the first working day after the remand hearing. At this meeting a timetable of appointments and activities will be drawn up. Depending on the needs identified in the assessment the young person may have appointments with the Scheme co-ordinator, other YOS staff, trained sessional workers or other specialist agencies for example drug services or the careers office.

Enforcement action will be carried out in keeping with national standards for Bail Support Services.

One unacceptable non-attendance will result in a written warning, following the second the case will be referred to the police for breach of bail.
