Help keep Hillingdon clean and green

Friday 14 May 2021: The Great British Spring Clean, a mass-action environmental campaign organised by Keep Britain Tidy, runs from 28 May to 13 June, and Hillingdon Council is inviting residents to join one of its three community litter picking events in the borough.

Due to a sharp increase in footfall at Hillingdon parks during the COVID-19 pandemic, the council has installed larger bins in busy areas and increased the frequency of visits by its litter crews. Local volunteer groups, including Hillingdon Litter Pickers, are also supported by the council to regularly collect rubbish along rivers, streets, parks and open spaces.

Local residents can now get involved and play their part to help improve the local environment at Hillingdon's award-winning local parks and green spaces.

Litter picking events will take place at Hillingdon House Farm on Wednesday 26 May from 11am to 1pm, Pinn Meadows in Ruislip on Saturday 5 June from 10.30am to 12pm, and Cranford Park on Sunday 13 June from 11am to 1pm.

Places are limited and will need to be booked online on the council's website prior to the event. Litter picking activity can go ahead individually, as part of two households, or in small groups of up to six volunteers, and participants must adhere to social distancing and the latest government guidelines.

Residents who would rather participate in their own time can pledge to litter pick for as many hours as they choose, either as an individual or in groups, by visiting: www.keepbritaintidy.org

Last year, more than 100 bags of rubbish weighing nearly a tonne were removed from Hillingdon parks and streets as part of the council's community clean-up events for the Great British September Clean.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, Housing and Regeneration, said: "Last year's clean-ups were a great success, and we're looking forward to welcoming more Hillingdon residents at our litter picking events to help protect the local environment.

"Hillingdon is one of London's greenest boroughs and the council will continue to protect its award-winning parks and open spaces, whilst looking for ways to be more sustainable and energy efficient.

"Please remember to take photographs on your litter pick - and share these with us on social media!"

Participants are encouraged to share photos and videos of their litter picks @Hillingdon on Instagram and Twitter.
