Naming ceremonies

We can offer Naming Ceremonies to families who wish to celebrate the birth of a new baby or who wish to welcome adoptive or stepchildren into a new relationship.

Mother and baby

The ceremonies are secular and do not contain religious references. Parents wishing to have a religious ceremony should contact their local church or religious community.

The Register Office staff will assist in designing a ceremony to suit the individual needs of the family. The format can include a welcoming of the child into the family, an announcement of the chosen names, promises of commitment and support for the child into adult life and the choice of other adults, and/or grandparents, prepared to offer a supporting role to the parents.

A selection of poems or readings may also be included in the ceremony, together with a special gift to the child.

A souvenir record of the ceremony will be signed and presented during the event.

Naming ceremonies are available at the Register Office or Approved Venues.

Further details are available on request.
