Nominations open for the Kids in Care Awards 2023

Monday 10 July 2023: Hillingdon Council is inviting residents to nominate someone special for its annual Kids in Care Awards 2023. The awards recognise young people who have overcome a difficult upbringing or challenging circumstances to make an outstanding achievement in their lives.

You can nominate individuals or groups of children and young people who have been looked after by the council and made positive choices, achieved excellent exam results, contributed to the community, done well in sport, or made personal progress by improving their own development, self-esteem or sense of wellbeing.

Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a gala event, hosted by the Mayor of Hillingdon, in September.

One of last year's KICA winners said: " I was touched and humbled by the ceremony and being part of a care leavers celebration. I got to listen to other people's experiences, but it allowed me to reflect on how far I have come. I can actually say now that I am proud of who I am, and where I've come from." Her personal advisor went on to explain that our winner feels a newfound sense of confidence since KICA, she believes in her own ability and was really happy to have the opportunity to show her friends who she is and help them to better understand the care leaver community.

Cllr Susan O'Brien, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "I'm delighted that our Kids in Care Awards are once again open for nominations.   We are committed to creating safe and strong communities and these awards are an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the fantastic achievements of children and young people in the borough and their dedication and commitment to overcoming challenges.

"The awards are an opportunity for friends, neighbours, carers and teachers to nominate and share the amazing journeys and achievements of these incredible young people with us. So, if you know a child in care or recent care leaver who has impressed you, please take the time to nominate them and share their story."

More that 520 deserving recommendations were submitted last year, which is a record for the council.

Nominations close on Sunday 30 July.
