Council improvements help protect listed structure in Uxbridge

Wednesday 18 June 2025: Hillingdon Council has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the borough's heritage assets after investing £500,000 to deliver essential refurbishments to the Hillingdon and Uxbridge Cemetery Gatehouse, which dates back to the 1850s.

The Grade II listed structure is an attractive 19th century brick and stone building facing Hillingdon Hill, a short distance from the junction with Kingston Lane. The building marks the entranceway to the cemetery and was previously the caretaker's house and graveyard office.

In recent years, the condition of the building had deteriorated so the council invested in a restoration project to help protect the gatehouse for the future.

The project included internal structural repairs, works to repair the roof structure and covering using reclaimed tiles, internal wall supports, repairs to the stonework and the archway, as well as cleaning the stonework.

Cllr Jonathan Bianco, Hillingdon Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Property, said: "We're delighted to have been able to give this lovely building with its eye-catching archway some well-deserved investment to help preserve it for future generations.

"We're committed to protecting our heritage and listed structures and hope the results of our work here mean more people will notice and appreciate this impressive structure and appreciate the historic value it holds."
