85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain commemorated in Uxbridge

Monday 1 September 2025: Hillingdon Council's Battle of Britain Bunker Exhibition and Visitor Centre in Uxbridge is marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a series of events running from Saturday 6 to 27 September.

The three-week long programme includes a range of activities, from dedicated 'Speaker Series' historical talks and themed tours, to a performance by the RAF Northolt Central Band, a wreath-laying ceremony and a new pop-up exhibition.

On Friday 12 September, the exhibition will launch at a special 'Museum Late' event - a rare opportunity to visit the bunker and visitor centre 'after hours' and see the collection, which includes objects, documents, and artworks on public display for the very first time.

Across the weekend of 13-14 September, there's a packed programme for families and history-lovers. There are Pipsqueaks story time sessions for young children and family tours and activities, a Battle of Britain Experience tour with actors helping to tell the story, an interactive performance from Freshwater Theatre, and the bunker's Generator House opens its doors to the public for the second time as part of Heritage Open Days, with its 1930s generator available to view up close.

On Monday 15 September, visitors are invited to pay their respects during a wreath-laying ceremony at the bunker's memorial from 11am.

And on Thursday 25 September, the Ensemble of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force will perform a free concert in the visitor centre - booking is essential.

The Battle of Britain was the first campaign of the Second World War to be fought entirely from the air and lasted for 16 weeks, from 10 July until 31 October 1940.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said: "During the past 18 months our bunker has had the privilege of hosting commemorations for several major historic milestones of the Second World War, from the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings last summer, to the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May, to now marking the 85th anniversary of Battle of Britain Day.

"These events provide opportunities for reflection and education about the conflict, the many acts of great bravery and a moment to honour all those whose lives were affected.

"But we've also got some fun events to cater for families so younger generations can also learn the importance of our bunker to this moment in history."

Entry to most events and activities is included in the price of a bunker tour or visitor centre ticket.
