What is the Ultra Low Emission Zone?
The ULEZ initiative was introduced by the Mayor of London in 2019 to central London and expanded to include all London Boroughs.
The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, except Christmas Day (25 December).
If you drive anywhere within the ULEZ, including the expanded area and your vehicle does not meet the emission standards, you could face a daily charge of £12.50. This includes residents within the ULEZ. You will not be required to pay the ULEZ charge if you are parked inside the zone and don't drive.
From Tuesday 29 August 2023, the ULEZ has expanded across all other London boroughs, including Hillingdon. Click the image below to view a map of the expansion.
You can check your destination to find out if it is within the ULEZ charging zones on TFL's website.
Is your vehicle compliant?
If your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ emission standards and isn't exempt, you will be required to pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive inside the zone. This charge can amount to over £4,500 a year, per vehicle.
This applies to:
- specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes)
- minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes)
The Mayor of London has launched a new scrappage scheme providing financial assistance to help London residents scrap their vehicles if they do not meet ULEZ standards to prepare for the expansion of ULEZ across all London boroughs.
Check the TfL website to see if your vehicle is eligible, how much financial assistance you could receive and how to apply.
You should always use TFL's official online payment process to pay the Ultra Low Emission Zone charge. Please check TFL's website for more information on fraud payments.
