Start for Life

The first 1,001 days (from conception to 2 years old) is considered to be the most important time in a child's life for development.

Whether you're a parent/carer, grandparent or other family member, you can use our Start for Life pages to find information, advice and support for this vital period of a child's life.

Mental health and wellbeing

The first few weeks and months after having a baby can be very emotional, and you may feel a huge mix of emotions. Looking after your mind is just as important as looking after your body, for both you and your baby.

Family hubs and children's centres

Our children's centres and family hubs offer a range of workshops and courses to support parents with low mood and anxiety.

Wellbeing for mums

If you're struggling to cope with the adjustment to parenthood, you're felling low, isolated, anxious or emotionally overwhelmed, Talking Therapies runs a 6-week group for mums who need emotional support. The group offers the chance to meet other mums, build a network around you and learn new skills to cope.

To access this support, speak with your health visitor, a member of staff at one of our family hubs or children's centres staff or your GP and ask to be referred. Alternatively, you can self refer by calling 01895 206800.

Please note: A telephone assessment will be offered initially to check this is the right option for support.

Support for dads

Having a baby is a life-changing and exciting event. It can feel very new and maybe a bit daunting, but there is lots of information and support for dads and dads-to-be.

  • Dads and partners - information and support for dads who are planning a pregnancy or having a baby.
  • DadPad - the essential guide for new dads, developed with the NHS.

Postnatal Awareness Depression and Support (PANDAS)

If you're struggling with helplessness, low mood, anxiety or have any concerns about your health during or beyond your pregnancy, call the free PANDAS helpline on 0808 1961 776 (available 11am to 10pm every day). Their dedicated volunteer team is on hand to offer support and advice, and can direct you to other organisations.

You can also call for advice and support if you're concerned about someone you know.

Hillingdon Perinatal Mental Health Service

The Hillingdon Perinatal Mental Health Service offers assessment and treatment to women experiencing mental health difficulties during pregnancy and within the first year after delivery. This specialist care is delivered close to the maternity unit of your choice, your home or in one of our children's centres or family hubs (depending on your preference).

You can access this service even if you choose to deliver your baby at a hospital different from Hillingdon, as long as you are a Hillingdon resident or you are registered with a GP in Hillingdon.

GPs, midwives, health visitors and other health and care services can refer you to the Hillingdon Perinatal Mental Health Service.
