Housing advice and homelessness

Housing advice

The council can provide housing advice and assistance on a wide range of housing problems.

Find your own home

The easiest way to find a new place to live can often be to rent somewhere from a private landlord. Most landlords will sign a contract with you before you move in, ensure your property is properly maintained and that necessary repairs are carried out, and will respect your rights as a tenant.

Shelter provides advice on how to find a privately-rented home and what to look out for along the way.

Social housing

The homeless application is not a pathway to an offer of social housing. The outcome for most homelessness applications is an offer of accommodation in the private rented sector. Those who seek social housing need to apply to join the Housing Register via Locata and must meet all the necessary conditions for a Housing Register application.

Support with rent

Depending on your financial situation, you may be able to claim the Housing Element of Universal Credit towards the cost of your rent. We can assist in negotiations with landlords and can offer advice on all areas of renting.

Support with mortgages

If you think you may experience problems making regular mortgage payments, contact your lender as soon as possible, as they may be able to prevent you from losing your home.

If you're a homeowner, you might be able to get help towards interest payments on:

  • your mortgage
  • loans you've taken out for certain repairs and improvements to your home.

These payments are normally paid directly to your mortgage lender or loan provider.

Facing eviction

If you have an eviction order from your lender seek immediate advice from [waiting for link].

A suspended eviction order or adjournment can give you time to get advice, a debt management plan, seek agreement with your lender and prepare for your next hearing.

Domestic abuse

Domestic abuse is a crime and should reported to the police. If you, or someone you know, is in immediate danger call 999.

If you, or someone you know, is a victim of domestic violence and abuse, you can report this to the council.
