Start learning an instrument

Hillingdon Music Hub offers different ways for children to start learning musical instruments.

We offer two kinds of music tuition for children beginning their musical journey:

  • Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (for beginners, arranged by your child's school)
  • Standard tuition (for students in the early stages of learning, often beginners)

For students with some playing and sight-reading experience, we also offer:

  • Music School and Ensembles where students can participate in bands, orchestras, theory lessons and choirs
  • Advanced tuition (longer lessons, by tutor invitation, for students Grade 2 and up)

Standard tuition (for beginners or students continuing from Whole Class)

In many schools, we offer the chance for students from Year 4 and above to take small group or short individual lessons in various instruments. These carry a cost, usually payable by the parent.

You can check our List of Standard Tuition offered (by school and centre) to find out which instruments are offered in your child's school.

If we do not currently have tuition in your child's school, or if your child is home-educated, there is the option of learning outside school hours at our Tuesday evening tuition centre in West Drayton (offered from September 2018).

If you have checked which instruments are available to you and are ready to go on to a waiting list for assessment:

Whole Class Ensemble Tuition - selected schools

This is available via your child's primary school, if offered - usually in the junior years (Years 2 to 6). You can't sign your child up for this on this site, so if this option interests you, talk to the person in charge of music at your child's school instead. Normally these lessons are part of the school day and are free.

If your school doesn't offer this but would like to, they can approach the Music Hub about starting up lessons if they don't currently offer this but want to.
