Key amnesty
From Monday 12 May to Monday 23 June 2025, we are running a key amnesty to give anyone who is potentially committing tenancy fraud an opportunity to avoid prosecution or legal action by returning their council property keys to us.
Examples of council housing being used illegally
If you have the keys to a council property and any of the following apply, you could be committing tenancy fraud:
- illegally subletting to other people to make money
- fraudulent right to buy
- lying about your tenancy agreement and housing application
- not disclosing changes to your circumstances
- failing to declare that you no longer live in your council property.
Return your council property keys
From Monday 12 May to Monday 23 June 2025, bring your keys and a form of photo ID (such as your passport or driving license) to the main reception at the Civic Centre, during the hours of 9am to 5pm.
When you hand in your keys, you'll need to complete a short form with details about the property, including its address and condition.
We will then terminate your tenancy and begin the process of allocating the property to the most in need of a home.
Please note:
- The property must be empty for us to remove your name from the tenancy
- Tenants who hand their keys in voluntarily during the key amnesty (Monday 12 May to Monday 23 June 2025) will not face any consequences.
