Rubbish collections

We collect general rubbish every week from more than 100,000 households in the borough.

Instead of throwing away unwanted items that still have life in them, why not donate them to a charity, such as Trinity, or sell/giveaway unwanted items through FreegleFreecycleLoveJunk marketplace or social media sites.

Household rubbish

All rubbish should be stored in large, tied black bags, ready for your collection day.

Important: Electricals and batteries
Never put electricals (including vapes) or batteries in with your rubbish, as these can cause fires when transported in our vehicles. You can recycle electricals and batteries in allĀ Hillingdon libraries.

What can I put in my household rubbish?

Important:

  • Do not put cooking oils directly into your rubbish bags, as the liquid can leak and create safety issues for our crews. Small amounts of cooking oil can be poured into a container and placed into your black bag. Alternatively, you can recycle cooking oil at one of our waste and recycling centre.
  • All unwanted knives should be taken to a knife bin or handed in at a police station.

  • Ceramics, such as broken plates or mugs
  • Cigarette buds
  • Hard plastics, such as plant pots
  • Nappies
  • Pet waste
  • Polystyrene
  • Sanitary products
  • Used tissues and wet wipes

Remember: You can recycle most household items through our different recycling schemes. Plus, there are lots of local and national channels where you can recycle or donate unwanted items.

Putting your rubbish out for collection

  • To avoid household rubbish bags being split open by foxes, birds and other animals, we strongly recommend the use of standard-size, circular domestic dustbins up to a maximum of 90 litres capacity (not wheeled bins) to safely contain your rubbish before collection day.
  • Residents must supply their own sacks for general waste - preferably black, not white, as these may be confused with recycling sacks.
  • If bags must be placed on a path or public highway for collection, they should not obstruct cars, pedestrians or other vehicles.

If you live in a house

  • Keep all of your waste bags within your property boundary until your collection day.
  • On your collection day, leave your tied black bag on the end of your property boundary before 6am.
  • If you do not have a front garden, leave the tied black bag on the pavement the night before collection day (no earlier than 5.30pm).

Large communal bin used for rubbish at flats.
If you live in a high-rise or low-rise flat

  • Most high-rise and low-rise flats have a communal bin store, which includes a large green bin (also called a Eurobin) for rubbish. Each bin will be labelled to show what can be put in with your waste.
  • Tie your black bags and place them inside the green (rubbish) bin.

Flats with kerbside collection (sacks only)

If you live in a flat that doesn't have communal rubbish bins, your collections may be made from the kerbside.

  • Please leave your well-tied black sacks in the designated areas on the morning of your collection before 6am (or the evening before, no earlier than 5.30pm).
  • If you're unsure where to place your waste bags, please contact the property's managing agent or your landlord who should be able to advise.

Flats above shops

Currently, residents living in flats above shops can dispose of general waste only (using black bags).

  • Most flats above shops operate a kerbside collection of sacks (see above information).
  • If your property has a communal green (rubbish) bin for the development, please place your black bags into the bin.
  • Do not place your waste in, or around, any trade bins, as this might lead to missed collections.

Look up my collection day

Missed rubbish collection

If your rubbish hasn't been collected on your collection day and you have followed instructions for collection, please let us know and we will make another collection within 2 working days.

Please note: A missed collection cannot be reported until after 1.30pm on your collection day and must be within 72 hours of the collection being missed.

What happens to my waste?

All non-recyclable rubbish we collect in Hillingdon is taken to one of the two transfer stations in Ruislip and Colnbrook.

From there, waste is loaded into trains and sent to an energy recovery facility, where it is burned and used to generate energy in the form of heat and electricity.
